Welcome to Lesson 6!

In the previous lesson, you learned how to describe your personality using adjectives and the verb être.

Today, you will learn how to talk about your family and relationships. You will learn the names of family members, use avoir to describe who is in your family, and explain how you get along with different people.

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to describe your family, introduce family members and explain simple relationships.

Some family words have masculine and feminine forms.

3. Grammar focus – Avoir

We use avoir to say that we have brothers, sisters or other family members.

Structure

Subject + avoir + family member

Examples:

Je n’ai pas de sœur.

4. Asking about family

To ask someone about their family, you can use:

When we say my in French, the word changes according to the noun.

You already know personality adjectives.

Now we can combine:

This allows you to give more information about your family.

8. Grammar focus – Negation with avoir

To say that you do not have a family member, use:

ne + avoir + pas de

Je n’ai pas de frère.

Je n’ai pas de sœur.

Je n’ai pas de cousins.

Notice that after ne… pas, we normally use de.

Positive

Negative

Je n’ai pas de frère.
