Welcome to Lesson 3! In this lesson, you will explore how family relationships and personal connections can contribute to your identity.

You will learn how to talk about your family, describe the people who are important to you, and use possessive adjectives such as mon, ma, mes, ton, ta, tes, son, sa, ses.

You will also learn how to give more information about your family by describing people’s personality, relationships and importance in your life.

The goal is not simply to list family members. You will learn how to describe relationships and explain how the people around you contribute to who you are.

Usage

Use c’est to introduce or identify one person or one thing.

Possessive adjectives tell us who something belongs to or the relationship between a person and something.

In English:

In French:

Usage

Use mon, ma, mes to say my.

Structure

mon + masculine singular noun

ma + feminine singular noun

mes + plural noun

9. Important rule – The Noun determines the Possessive

The possessive adjective agrees with the thing/person possessed, not the person who owns it.

For example:

ma mère

because mère is feminine.

mon père

because père is masculine.

mes parents

because parents is plural.

It does not matter whether the speaker is male or female.

Compare

A boy can say:

ma mère

A girl can also say:

ma mère

The form is determined by mère, not by the speaker.

10. Mon / Ma before a Vowel

There is an important exception.

Before a feminine noun beginning with a vowel sound, use mon instead of ma.

Why?

French avoids two vowel sounds next to each other.

mon amie

is easier to pronounce than:

Usage

Use ton, ta, tes to say your when speaking informally to one person.

12. His / Her – Son, Sa, Ses

French uses the same forms for his and her.

Structure

Important

Son does not always mean his.

It can mean his OR her, depending on the context.

Usage

Use avoir to say which family members you have.

Usage

Use être + adjective to describe a family member’s personality or characteristics.

Remember that adjectives agree with the person you describe.

Use aimer to describe the interests of your family members.

This is an important step toward expressing identity and relationships.

Usage

Use important(e) pour moi to explain the importance of a person.

Person + est + important(e) pour moi + parce que + reason
