LESSON 2 – Personality and Values

4

PART 2 – Grammar

Dear Students,

In this lesson, you have learned to describe your personality, your qualities, your weaknesses, and your values. However, vocabulary alone is not enough. To communicate effectively in French, you also need to use grammar accurately.

During the IB French Ab Initio examinations, grammar is assessed in every component:

  • Paper 1 (Writing): You need to write clearly and accurately.
  • Paper 2 (Reading): You need to understand grammatical structures in authentic texts.
  • Individual Oral: You are expected to speak fluently using correct sentence structures.

The grammar points in this lesson are among the most frequently used whenever you describe yourself or another person. Study them carefully, complete the exercises, and try to use them naturally in your speaking and writing.

Grammar 1 – Les adjectifs qualificatifs (Descriptive Adjectives)

What is an adjective?

An adjective is a word that describes a person, place, object, or idea. It adds more information to a noun.

Examples in English

  • intelligent student
  • kind teacher
  • beautiful city
  • hardworking employee

Examples in French

  • un étudiant intelligent
  • une professeure gentille
  • une ville magnifique
  • un élève travailleur

French adjectives must agree with the noun they describe in gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural).

Rule 1 – Masculine singular

The masculine singular form is the basic dictionary form.

Examples

Il est intelligent.

Mon frère est sportif.

Mon ami est sympathique.

Le professeur est patient.

Rule 2 – Feminine singular

Most adjectives form the feminine by adding -e.

Grammar 2 – BANGS Adjectives

One of the biggest differences between English and French is the position of adjectives.

In English, adjectives usually come before the noun.

a beautiful house

In French, most adjectives come after the noun.

une maison moderne

However, there is an important group of adjectives that usually comes before the noun. To remember them, use the acronym BANGS.

What does BANGS mean?

LetterMeaningExamples
BBeautybeau, joli, magnifique*
AAgejeune, vieux, nouveau
NNumberpremier, deuxième, dernier
GGoodnessbon, mauvais, meilleur
SSizegrand, petit, gros, long, court

Note: While magnifique describes beauty, it usually comes after the noun. Not every adjective of beauty follows the BANGS placement rule. The most common BANGS adjectives are beau/belle and joli/jolie.

B – Beauty

These adjectives describe beauty or appearance.

Special forms Before a Vowel or Silent “h”

Some masculine singular adjectives change form before a noun beginning with a vowel or silent h.

NormalBefore Vowel/H
beaubel
nouveaunouvel
vieuxvieil

Examples

Multiple adjectives

When a noun has more than one adjective, BANGS adjectives usually come before the noun, while most descriptive adjectives come after it.

J’habite dans une maison. J’ai un ami. Mon professeur est sympathique. Mon école est moderne. J’aime mon quartier.

Try to include adjectives of beauty, age, goodness, number, and size.

IB examination tip

During the Individual Oral and Paper 1, avoid using simple nouns on their own.

Instead of writing:

J’habite dans une maison.

Write:

J’habite dans une grande maison moderne située près de mon école.

Instead of saying:

J’ai un ami.

Say:

J’ai un bon ami qui est très intelligent et toujours prêt à m’aider.

Using adjectives correctly makes your French more precise, more natural, and more sophisticated. Accurate adjective agreement and placement are rewarded under the Language criterion in IB French Ab Initio.
